It Sucks Being Sick

I was warned there is a stomach virus going around. Um... thanks but you were a little too late.

We were awoken at 4:30 Saturday morning to a screaming Gremlin. When my husband went in there, he found her and her mattress covered in pink puke with pink chunks. We gave her Tylenol before bed because she was teething... or so we assumed based on her crabby behavior. It was pink.

When he picked her up, she started to puke again. Since this was the first time she ever threw up (and because my first instinct would probably have been the same), I can understand why his first thought upon getting puked on was to hold her over the crib and have it go on the already dirty sheets. But, being the wonderful father he is, he just held her and let her puke on his white t-shirt. Then cleaned EVERYTHING.

We stripped the bed and threw everything in the wash. After wiping her down and putting on new PJs, she settled and seemed ok and went back to sleep. When she woke up at 8:30, she was tired and a little groggy, but otherwise normal. No fever, no puking, no diarrhea, nothing. She seemed fine all day, so we figured it was food poising or something else fast moving.

The next several nights she kept waking up repeatedly, woke up for good each morning much earlier than usual and had unusual diaper deposits (I'll spare those of you who are not parents the details of that joy). We just chalked it up to the two canine teeth she was cutting.

Apparently we were wrong.

On Wednesday, the nanny had to stay home with her sick daughter, so the Gremlin spent the day with 2.0 and I. It was a good thing too, because by 9 am she had already gone through three diapers and two outfit changes. :(

After a quick call to the doctor, I discovered there is a stomach virus going around. Starts out with a day of vomiting (thankfully we got the short version of that) then 5-7 days of diarrhea. Again, seems we just had the short version of the diarrhea, thank God. The cure? Lots of water and hand washing. And no fruit or dairy.

So, after several diaper changes yesterday, I did what any good mother would do with a child who has a virus but otherwise is fine... we went to IKEA!

Of course, she had a great time. She even rode up the escalator on her own (once - the four other times we had to use one, I had to carry her). She stomped through the store like she owned the place. One woman commented that she looked like she was on a mission. She marched when she saw the arrows on the ground, climbed up and rode down the slide in the children's bedroom area all on her own, and listened to almost everything I asked her to do. It wasn't until she saw the bathrooms and said "po po" (poo poo for those who are not fluent in "child") that you would even have known she was sick. We of course went to the bathroom and she of course had a poopy diaper. We also had to "use" the toilet twice while we were in there.

By this time, IKEA had served it's purpose and it was nap time. So home we went.

Now, least your forget, I have another child. 2.0 was, as usual, hanging from my chest in the Bjorn. If anyone is thinking about purchasing one of those... DO IT! It is tied for the most popular item we have for the kids. The BOB is the other one.

Our only glitch of the day was once we got home. By now it was 1:30, time for the Gremlin's nap and 2.0's bottle. Since I can only do one of those at a time, and the Gremlin had already started to fall sleep in the car, she was first. So I tried to put her to sleep while I listened to 2.0 crying downstairs. Anyone who is nursing knows what happens when your child cries and you don't answer those cries... we'll just say my shirt was a little wet by the time I finally put the Gremlin in her crib and let her cry it out for 10 minutes.

But then 2.0 ate and went down for his long nap, and it was just me, the Monster and her Majesty. I have to say (fingers crossed) I LOVE the fact that both of them go down for naps between 1:30 and 4. It gives me time to clean/bathe/sleep/eat/regroup. :)

All in all, we survived our day together. Do I think I could be a stay-at-home mom? Possibly. Do I want to? Um... no.

Here is 2.0 looking dapper as ever. The kid has more clothes than the rest of us combined! Thanks Aunt Abby, Aunt Tristan and Aunt Mindee. :) Please note: that is a 3-month outfit he is wearing and it is too short to button the collar and the ankles come to his calf. He is 8 weeks.

  1. Those Ralph Lauren outfits do run small (meaning Finn could wear the 6 months at 6 months), but still Nolan, you are a big boy!

Hi Ho Hi Ho, It's Off to Work I Go

Had to head into the office today. Everyone went along with the show this morning and we didn't have too many glitches. Other than the fact that someone likes to eat the Play-Dough. I gave her one warning and told her it was going away if she ate it again, so of course she ate it again. I know she knows what I am saying and is just testing me to see if I will do what I threaten. I tell you, it is hard to be firm and consistent. Especially when she looks up at me with a single tear in her eye and points at the Play-Dough and says "Doe...more...peez!" And as for the first day at the nanny yesterday... 2.0 was PERFECT. He stayed on schedule, went down for his naps with no issues, didn't cry or fuss and ate just a little less than each bottle I sent over. When I picked them up the nanny said, "he's nothing like the Gremlin was back then." No, he isn't, THANK GOD!!! And of course big sister LOVED having him there with her all day long. As for me, I ...

Wouldn't Trade It for the World

I wish I had a way of recording life as it was happening. I wanted to preserve the memory of what happened that badly, so I am writing it here to remember forever... I'll give you a little back story first. The Gremlin woke up around 5:15 or so and cried out for a few minutes. It was an odd cry. It was not her "I'm hungry" cry or a simple "I woke up and didn't want to" cry. This was more of a "I am scared, help me" sound. But she fell back asleep, so I figured it was just a bad dream and now it was done. 2.0 woke up at 6:15, so I went in to feed him. And when I got to his door, the Gremlin started crying out again. And didn't stop. My husband has to leave for work at 6:45, so there was no way he was going to be able to help out. I was on my own. So after I finished feeding 2.0, I went into the Gremlin's room. This is when I wanted the filming to start. I walked in and saw something that just broke my heart. The Gremlin was sittin...

Gifts of All Shapes and Sizes

I have been traveling for work a lot lately. I was gone Monday-Wednesday this week, but came back last night. So imagine someone's surprise when she woke up this morning to her mommy, whom she hadn't seen since Sunday night, singing Happy Birthday to her. Know what she did? She laughed, turned over and said "No no. Way, way." Then coyly turned her head and smiled up at me. I don't think she likes my singing. On that, she is not alone. Today is the big day. She is turning 2. Are we in for a year of tantrums and screaming? Maybe, but as long as there are also days like today, where she laughed and danced and gave me kisses, it is all worth it. Here are a few photos of the birthday girl and my sleeping prince. The first is the outfit we picked out this morning, because it looks like something daddy would wear (swear, that is what she said when she picked it out of the closet). The second is the outfit we HAD to change in to when it arrived via special delivery fr...
